How to Turn on ClearType
For Windows 7:
1. In the Control Panel (Category view), select 'Appearance and Personalization'
2. Under Fonts, select 'Adjust ClearType text'
3. Follow the instructions on your screen to adjust your ClearType settings

How to Remove Microsoft Sticky Notes from Startup
Click Start and in the search box type: msconfig. Under the Startup tab, scroll down and find the Microsoft Windows Operating System command: C:\Windows\System32\StikyNot.exe, and uncheck that box. Be sure to choose the right one, there are two Microsoft Windows Operating System commands in there.

How to Split a PDF File
I needed to split a 53MB (yes, large) PDF document in two. There are so many "PDF Splitters" out there that just, well, don't work. How annoying to spend time with those.
This one worked for me:

I Like Google+ My Initial 3 Second Review
So looks like you can easily drag contacts into groups ('circles') and then just read or status out to that group. Could be ongoing, like 'Digital Analysts' or 'Family', or temp like 'Karen's Surprise Party'. Quick and easy to isolate conversations by circle - nice. Definitely a cross between Facebook/Twitter (and much easier if you have multiple Twitter accounts). And if you use Chrome, super sweet that it's always a click away via upper right corner icon. But what to give up?? My gym membership?

Google+ Remove Circles from Public View on Profile Page
To make your people circles non-visible on your public profile:
Within Google+, in the upper right corner click on your icon, then Profile, then in the body of the page "Edit Profile".
Mouse over the circles of people in the left rail, click, and uncheck: "Show people in my circles" and "Show people who have added you to circles".

Remove All Missing Songs from iTunes
This is how to quickly remove all dead tracks from iTunes:
1) Make a static playlist called “All Live Files” and drag your entire library into it. Be sure you 'DRAG' not 'copy' your files.
2) Make a smart playlist called “Missing Files” with the rules set as ‘Playlist’ ‘is’ ‘Music’ and another rule set as ‘Playlist’ ‘is not’ ‘All Live Files’
3) ...the broken songs will not transfer and “Missing Files” will contain all those broken songs.
4) Delete the songs in the Missing Files folder:
Windows: SHIFT + DEL
Mac: OPTION + DEL

Best Format for High Quality CD Sound
There's no real consensus here, but would go with WAV if you want to preserve the original format as close as possible (but takes up lots of space). However going with mp3 will "compress audio files to about one tenth of their original size while delivering close to CD quality audio".

Sony Vaio Touchpad Stopped Working
Options to fix the Touch Pad:
❑ You may have disabled the touch pad. Press the Fn+F1 keys to enable it. (This is what happened to me. Not sure how that happened though.).
I've also had to power-off and then back on again to get the touchpad to work.
Other options per Sony's Vaio Manual - haven't tried most of these:
❑ Make sure that a mouse is not connected to your computer. (DigitalQA - This shouldn't matter.)
❑ If the pointer does not move while a software application is running, press the Alt+F4 keys to close the application window.
❑ If the Alt+F4 keys do not work, press the Windows key once and then the , key several times, select Restart with the M or m key, and press the Enter key to restart your computer.
❑ If your computer does not restart, press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys, select the arrow next to the Shut down button with the m and , keys, press the Enter key, select Restart with the M or m key, and press the Enter key to restart your computer.
❑ If this procedure does not work, press and hold the power button until the computer turns off.

7/12 - Be careful. This machine is not yet available in the states. If you see one for sale it is not the New Z (likely a refurbished old Z - the old Z is nice but I blew mine up in ~2 years). Currently the new Z is only available outside of the states and does not have the specs out of the box for you to run here.

I am not saying it's a bad laptop. It is a solid device but the price of the new VIAO Z is the biggest turnoff. Costing you over $3000 you might as well go for the Macbook Air that looks classy. Moreover the new Power Media Dock is a burden to carry around and hampers the portability of the laptop in general. My advice, if you got the money and you like Sony's new VIAO Z style go for it. Otherwise go for the Samsung Series 9 or the Macbook Air."
Keeping some pluses/notes here:
- Compared with the ubiquitous 13-inch MacBook Pro, the Sony Vaio Z is not quite as thin, but it's definitely lighter (source).
- For years we've dinged Sony for its bloatware and adware-filled systems, but the company has toned its act down of late. The Vaio Z shoves only a handful of marketing come-ons at you, including one labeled "Secure your Vaio rewards," which in our case was an offer to buy a one-year license for Norton security and LoJack for laptops software for $99 (source).
- In anecdotal use, we found the Vaio Z116 to be probably the fastest 13-inch laptop we've used, and great for effortless multitasking, aided no doubt by the 256GB solid-state hard drive. Then again, for a $2,000-plus laptop, we'd expect nothing less. (source).
- Sony includes an industry-standard one-year parts and labor warranty with the system, which smartly includes onsite service. - PRICING: Right now the Z starts at $1,919 for a base configuration (128GB RAID0 SSD, i5 540M, 4GB RAM) and goes all the way up to $4,799 for a Signature Edition (512GB RAID0 SSD, i7 620M, 8GB RAM, 1080P panel). (source)

Change Default Spacing in Word
Out of the package Word defaults to lots of spaces between lines and paragraphs. There are two methods to change the default to just one space between each.
#1 - Microsoft Support's Mr. Fix-it works great to fix this, and I used that.
Or, if you want to do it manually:
#2 - To fix the line spacing and paragraph spacing in Word 2007 so that it is the same as in earlier versions of Word, you have to change the Style Set option.
To do this, follow these steps:
Click the Home tab.
Click Change Styles in the Styles group, point to Style Set, and then click the style set that you want to use.
To change the default formatting of your document, such as the line spacing and paragraph spacing, to the default formatting that is used in earlier versions of Word, click Word 2003.

Installing Microsoft Security Essentials
Currently I use Norton Anti-virus which is included free with my Comcast internet connection (but I do not use their Constant Guard due to all the problems with that app).

Receiving Duplicate Yahoo Emails in Outlook
If you have an alias (another email address) setup for your yahoo account, and leave your email on the server, you will get the email twice (once per each Alias). You'll need to configure the alias account so that it does not receive emails.
In Outlook 2007 and earlier:
Tools > Options > tab Mail Setup > Send /Receive button > Edit > select the alias account and uncheck Receive mail items.

- First copy (CTRL+C) this URL (you'll use it later): C:\Users\rls\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch (put your username in place of "rls").
- Right click on the Taskbar and uncheck "Lock the taskbar".
- Right click on the Taskbar again and select "Toolbars", then "New Toolbar" and Paste the above URL into the space beside "Folder", then click "Select Folder".
- Look all the way on the right of the Taskbar, you'll see the new "Quick Launch" toolbar. Click and hold on the words "Quick Launch" on the new Taskbar and when the cursor turns into a cross, drag it all the way to the left of the Taskbar.
- Right click the words "Quick Launch" and uncheck both Show Text and Show Title.
- Stretch the Quick Launch toolbar as long as you want it.
- Lock toolbars again.
- Viola!
Enable Delete Prompt again in Microsoft Sticky Notes
To enable this prompt again:
1- Type RegEdit in the Start search box and select it.
2- Locate the StickyNote registry subkey by clicking each of these:

3- Click PROMPT_ON_DELETE AND CHANGE "value Data" to 1 from 0.

How to Remove Comcast Search
This is how I FINALLY got rid of it. In Google Chrome, click on the wrench in the upper right hand corner, then Options. Click "Under the Hood". Under "Privacy" uncheck everything. (I did leave this one checked, "Enable phishing and malware protection").
Not sure if this made a difference but I did do this earlier: Went to Comcast Customer Central, Selected Users & Settings, Selected Disable Domain Helper.

Sony VAIO VPCSC1AFM - Thumbs Down (but I'm keeping it)
As you can see further below, I wound up keeping this machine. I'll share the not so great stuff as it happens.

Forgot to mention one of my pet peeves about all Sony VAIO machines.... VOLUME. Don't understand why the max volume is so low on Sony machines.
I guess I'm done with PC's... My next machine will be a MAC. Now that I can access my work via the MAC, there is nothing keeping me tied to Microsoft.
LOL... this is stamped on my VAIO , "Dolby Home Theater".

My 2 year-old Sony VAIO VGN-Z610Y finally disintegrated. It always ran hot, but it started getting sizzling hot and then turning itself off. Finally it just wouldn't stay on at all. Thinking I'd clear out some accumulated dust to keep the heat down, I opened the machine to find not much dust at all. (It did stay on longer with the machine wide open... but not very practical... :)
I wanted to wait for the new super cool Sony VAIO Z but looks like it will be a few months longer for it to debut here in the states. It's getting stellar reviews.
So I bought the only other available 13", the Sony VAIO VPCSC1AFM from Best Buy. But it's going back (even though the 15% restocking fee). I will somehow make the fried laptop work (USB keyboard and mouse!) until the new Z arrives. Keeping my eye on www.engadet.com - they seem to be the first to know about these types of things.
Here is the problem with Best Buy's (I now understand proprietary!) Sony VAIO VPCSC1AFM/S:
Even with the screen tilted as far back as it can go, the text is lighter than it should be. If you scrunch down and look up the screen or lift the front of the laptop (in effect tilting the screen back further) you can see the text becomes nice and dark. Tweaking the contrast will not fix this - the screen tilt is just off. It'sespecially noticeable when compared side by side with my VGN-Z610Y. Setting the machine on a platform helps but then it's weird typing while it's elevated. Sigh.
7/18 - Decided to keep the machine. I just didn't want to be bothered with returning it and re-imaging yet another computer. The screen display is not that great. The rest is OK. It's $1K vs. the $2K+ I would've spent on the new 2011 Vaio Z. Something tells me it's going to cost me to keep this machine however...

- The screen is quite crappy (details further below). In addition to the text that's not quite dark enough unless you hunchback and look up the screen, it's also just not very rich.
- Too easy to hit the Shut Down button instead of the Delete Key (lost work will happen!)
- The touch-pad intermittently stops working. Most of the time I have to shut down the laptop to regain touch-pad access. Fn + F1 doesn't work to reactivate the touch-pad. Strange.

Just to note, if you buy from Best Buy. These Blue Label laptops come with an extended 2 year warranty and you can read about it here on Best Buy's web site. The sales force is relentless about pushing their own Extended Warranty (or "performance service plans" as Best Buy likes to call them) and they will not mention this extended warranty that is already included.

I will somehow make the fried laptop work (USB keyboard and mouse!) until the new Z arrives. Keeping my eye on www.engadet.com - they seem to be the first to know about these types of things.
Here is the problem with Best Buy's (I now understand proprietary!) Sony VAIO VPCSC1AFM/S:
Even with the screen tilted as far back as it can go, the text is lighter than it should be. If you scrunch down and look up the screen or lift the front of the laptop (in effect tilting the screen back further) you can see the text becomes nice and dark. Tweaking the contrast will not fix this - the screen tilt is just off. It'sespecially noticeable when compared side by side with my VGN-Z610Y. Setting the machine on a platform helps but then it's weird typing while it's elevated. Sigh.
7/18 - Decided to keep the machine. I just didn't want to be bothered with returning it and re-imaging yet another computer. The screen display is not that great. The rest is OK. It's $1K vs. the $2K+ I would've spent on the new 2011 Vaio Z. Something tells me it's going to cost me to keep this machine however...

How to Delete ALL your Yahoo Email at Once
In the new version of Yahoo Mail (not the 'classic' version):
1- Click the "Switch View" box
2- Select "In Scrolling List (Hide Preview)"
3- Click the little checkbox directly under "Delete"
4- Click "Delete"
5- Click "OK", and there they go...

Blogger - How to Remove too much Space between Paragraphs
Here's how to remove that extra space:
In Compose mode (not HTML), select everything, then click the T with the red X on it on the toolbar.

It may still look like lots of space but is definitely less and is truly equivalent to the other lines. :)
UPDATE 7/20/2011: Realize that's only a fix for a single blog post and am looking for a "permanent" fix. I just adjusted this setting and hoping that works: Select Dashboard, Settings, Formatting, and change "Convert line breaks" to "Yes". Will let you know...
UPDATE 3/31/2012: Not had a chance to look at this but this looks promising. Look at the toolbar at the top of the post. It is possible your text is not set to Normal and that is what is causing the extra spaces:

How to see the Pictures you've Posted to a Flickr Group
To see the pictures you've posted to a group, first you'll need your Flickr ID (it is not the same as your Flickr user name). Use this great tool to determine your ID, and then in the link you see below replace everything after the /7519222@N05 with your ID.

Here is where to find Myspace Privacy Settings
Finally found the privacy settings here: Myspace Privacy Settings. You'll need to be logged in to get to the settings (of course...).
Change Download Location Default
This is done within the browser. Here is how to do it in Chrome, IE and Firefox.
In Chrome, click the wrench in the upper right hand corner, "Options", "Under the hood", and beside "Download" change "Download location:" to the directory you'd prefer your downloads to go to (e.g. C:\Users\rls\Downloads).
You can also check/uncheck the option: "Ask where to save each file before downloading".
You can also clear any auto-opening settings you've previously defined here.
In IE, from the menu bar click on "Tools", "View Downloads". At the bottom left hand, click on "Options". Browse and select your preferred download folder here.
