How to Import Facebook Email Addresses into Yahoo Mail or Outlook (or other email client)

Here is the EASY multi-step process to import your Facebook friends' email addresses:

1- Click to go to Yahoo's Email Address Import Tool and click the Facebook icon.

2- Click 'Okay' for "Do you want to share your contacts with Yahoo!"

3- All your Facebook emails are now in Yahoo*.

4- If you now want these in Outlook, click the Yahoo Email Address Export Tool and choose the program you want to Export to (Microsoft Outlook, Netscape/Thunderbird, Yahoo CSV, vCard Single File, .VCF)

*If your Facebook emails are not able to import, go into Facebook and select: Account (upper right hand corner) > Privacy Settings > "Edit your Settings" under "Apps and Websites" (lower left hand corner) > "Remove" under "Apps you use" and remove the Yahoo! Contact Importer (by clicking the little x beside "Edit settings" for that App).

How do I Access the Free Website in GoDaddy?

I always lose where that is, so am documenting the steps here:
  1. login to godaddy.com
  2. click accounts in upper right corner
  3. click my products (left rail)
  4. Manage domain
  5. under related products: click manage beside website tonight

Here's How to Remove the 2nd Gmail Address You Created

This allows you to revert to the Gmail address that used to be your primary address. It's easy. Here's how: Go here https://www.google.com/accounts/EditServices. Simply click on the link to remove the Gmail account you do not want. You will not lose your Google account.

How to Add a Flickr Photo to your Blog (with a link back to your Flickr Photo)

There are 2 methods to put a picture in your blog and Hyperlink to Flickr when the photo is clicked. The results are the same no matter which method you choose.

Method #1 is to click on the 'down-arrow' in the Share section above the photo in Flickr, and copy the html code under "Grab the HTML/BBCode" to your Blog (switch to 'Edit HTML' mode and just paste it where you want it).

Clearly this bird used to be domesticated. He was definitely doing a happy dance. Tony's Seafood Restaurant (Marshall, CA).
Method #2 is to upload the photo, and then go into the HTML code and replace what's after the "a href=" with your photo's URL. But if you aren't comfortable with that, stick with the 1st method above.

Similarity is my Favorite Duplicate Music File Finder

Similarity finds duplicate music files using file names, metadata tags, and a proprietary audio analysis AND makes it easy to remove them. Really simple. Works great.

I usually start with the highest matching choices (100% or close to) and this takes care of the majority of files with no sweat. Then I dial it down a bit and start weeding those out too. I can get by on the free version (I have about 24K audio files) but the pay for version has more bells and whistles if you want. Works on most all types of music files (MP3, AAC Apple audio files, M4A, WMA, OGG, WAV, lossless FLAC, APE, WV, MPC, etc.). Fantastic job on this utility.

Lifehacker likes them too

Sony Vaio - Fingerprint Sensor Not Working (and still doesn't)

8/8 - See poster's comment on another Vaio issue for a method to resolve fingerprint sensor problems: http://digital-qa.blogspot.com/2011/06/i-advise-against-installing-comcasts.html?showComment=1312824198492#c3317445861360041372

6/20 - Comcast's (Xfinity) new Constant Gaurd Protection Suite really messed this up. Had to remove the Fingerprint Sensor from launching at Startup until I find time to resolve. :(

6/19 - It appears this issue started after I installed Comcast's (Xfinity) new Constant Gaurd Protection Suite. Although I've uninstalled and rolled back my system to remove the Constant Guard Protection Suite. The fingerprint sensor continues to be inoperable and flash annoying messages. Not happy with Xfinity. Still looking for a fix.

6/18 - Stopped working again. It's sporadic. I do not yet have a fix yet but am working on it. :(

6/16 - This took awhile to find the fix - and several reboots after installing this software, but click here on Sony's support website to download the software that will make this start working again*. Of course you'll need to select your own Laptop/PC version (this link goes straight to the one I have). After installation, and reboot, it will seem like it is not working. After the 2nd reboot I could finally access the fingerprint assignment settings in the lower right-tray by right clicking on the icon. The next time I rebooted I got: touchstrip fingerprint sensor is installing drivers. That happened twice.

Finally I'm not getting that message any more at start-up that said something like this: No biometric device was detected. Please connect or enable the biometric device to initialize the fingerprint sofware.

Blackberry - Phone Stops Ringing

The fix is simple, but weird it happens. If your phone no longer rings (basically no sounds you've set for rings, text arrival, meetings, etc.), simply remove the battery for 30 seconds or so, then put it back in (basically a soft reset). This works for me.

If your Laptop is Stolen 1 - Mozy

Hopefully I'll never need this, but just-in-case, safekeeping it here. I backup my system with Mozy and totally recommend it. It's wonderful to never again have to think about something being backed up. Inevitably the time you need a backup (because everything disappeared after the crash) is the time you discover it's been two months since the last time you did one.

What to do if your computer was stolen

"If your laptop was stolen and you would like it back, Mozy can help.

Under certain circumstances Mozy can help locate a stolen laptop by tracing the IP address of the last backup. It is important that you do not install Mozy on a new computer until after the IP trace is complete.

 To acquire the IP address:

  • Contact your local law enforcement, and create a police report.
  • Open a case with Mozy Support requesting an IP trace.
  • Have the police station fax a IP trace request to Mozy, (801) 443-1801. The trace request must be addressed to the Mozy Support Specialist assigned to your support case.
Note: For security reasons an IP address can only be released to the investigating police officer. A notification will be added to your case when the IP trace has been faxed to the police station."

I Advise against installing Comcast's Constant Guard Protection Software

Update 1/31/2015 - OMG - Comcast is finally getting rid of Constant Guard. Thanks for all the headaches Infinity!
http://constantguard.comcast.net/cgps-alert "Beginning in January 2015, the Constant Guard Protection Suite® and Mobile app password management services will no longer be supported and managed by Comcast."

7/4 - If you haven't installed Constant Guard Protection, don't (if you have, see further below to uninstall). You can still use Xfinity's Norton Security Suite (which is simply Norton-Antivirus protection offered free with your Xfinity broadband connection). My system automatically reverted to that once I uninstalled Constant Guard. Just for safekeeping, here's the link to download Norton-Antivirus protection (without Constant Guard): http://xfinity.comcast.net/constantguard/Products/CGPS/norton/ and here are FAQs for that: http://us.norton.com/support/comcast.jsp?pvid=nsce_1&layout=Comcast

6/25 - Xfinity's Constant Guard Protection seems to compete with McAfee and Norton Security so if you have other security protection installed you will have problems. I've uninstalled Constant Guard Protection and the programs that Constant Guard Protection destroyed (e.g. the fingerprint scanner) until I either re-image my machine or find a fix. I am still using Xfinity's Norton Security Suite (which is simply Norton-Antivirus protection offered free with your Xfinity broadband connection).

6/21 - I may need to re-image my machine to get back all functionality. Not sure why I couldn't perform a system rollback after installing Xfinity's Constant Guard Protection Software. Very strange. Be careful with this program.

6/19 - NOTE: Installing Xfinity's Constant Guard Protection Software also caused my fingerprint scanner to stop working (they both control passwords) and I am having a tough time finding a fix. I am not very happy with Xfinity right now. Actually I'm livid.

6/11 - After installation, I was not able to access some sites (like logging into work via a secure id) and on some sites the alphakeys turned numeric. A search to find the uninstall process (below) shows other's with problems as well. Below is from Comcast's support site but posting here anyway for safekeeping (it's simply the standard Add/Remove Software utility in Control Panel. System roll-back did not work for me):

How do I uninstall Xfinity's Constant Guard Protection Suite software?
To uninstall Constant Guard™ Protection Suite software follow these steps:
1.        Click on Start (Windows XP) or the Windows flag (Windows Vista/7) in the lower left corner of the computer screen.
2.        Click on Control Panel.
3.        Click Add or Remove Software (XP), or Programs and Features (Vista/Windows 7).
4.        In the Programs list, find the Constant Guard Protection Suite software, highlight it and click to Uninstall.
5.        If you plan to re-install your Constant Guard Protection Suite, select Yes when you see the screen that says "Save secure password file?" If you don't plan to re-install your Constant Guard Protection Suite, click No.
6.       An optional Uninstall Survey will open.
7.        Restart your computer - shutting down and restarting the computer finishes the removal process.

I'll also stay away from Xfinity's newest, EasySolve.

Sony Taxi Download - Where are the files downloaded?

Here is where to find the files that are downloaded by Sony's support site's "Sony Download Taxi": c:\SonySupport.

In that directory will be dates like this "2011-06-08". Within the date folders are the downloads.

SnagIt - Hotkey not Working

Easy to fix: Go to Tools, Program Preferences.  Try different combinations of Global Capture hotkey until the Apply button is no longer grayed out (which means you can select it). I used CTRL+P.

My hotkey used to be CTRL+Prt Sc but evidently a program installation or update has hijacked that combination and SnagIt can no longer use it.

Easy Way to Keep HTML in Blog from Executing

Here's how to keep code from executing in your blog post when you are trying to show what the code looks like (rather than have it execute):

Instead of the left pointing caret, put this: & l t ; (put all 4 characters with no spaces) to produce: <
Instead of the right pointing caret, put this: & g t ; (put all 4 characters with no spaces) to product: >
EXAMPLE:

To produce this:

<form action="/search" method="get">
<input name="q" type="text"/>
<input value="Search" type="submit"/>
</form>

I typed this (although this is a picture here):

How to remove the Spaces left in your RSS Feed after removing AdSense

What worked for me was to unsubscribe from the feed. Then subscribe again. No more big white space in my feed! Yes, that really worked.

Of course all of your followers would likely have to do the same. Really, Adsense needs to fix this.

Update 7/31/2011--
Perhaps you can try this email address for Google AdSense: adsense-support@google.com Don't know where that will get you but found it here: Google AdSense Terms and Conditions

SMS Message Retrieval from Blackberry

Great tool to retrieve text messages from your phone. Thanks to http://code.google.com/p/ipddump/. Please refer to that site to download the utility.

"The ipddump is a utility that enables the user to... extract records from a Blackberry backup, which is an IPD (Inter@ctive Pager Backup) file."

Digital-QA is also posting the steps below (to be performed after downloading the utility) in case something happens to the site:

Desktop Version 6.0.1.18:

1.Connect your Blackberry and open the Desktop Manager.
2.Click Device > Backup
3.Select the data you want to save (SMS Messages).
4.Give it a file name and tell it what directory to place the file.
5.Click "Backup".
6.Open the ipddump application.
7.Select File > Open and open the file that you just downloaded.

I like to save as .CSV files and open via Excel. Then you can sort on any attribute (e.g. phone number that sent the text) and delete what you don't want to keep.

Run Program as an Administrator

Right click the app you are trying to use and select "Run as Administrator".

How to Make the Long Dashes

There's the En dash, the Em dash, and the plain old hyphen. When to use them and how to make them.

Never use a hyphen when you mean a dash. Mostly hypens are for making a word (like X-ray) or for writing out numbers (twenty-one).

To make the Em dash (which is the more popular between Em and En):

On a laptop, press the NumLk key then hold down ALT and type 0 1 5 1 (these are the numbers on the keys that were alpha-characters before you pressed ALT—not the row of numbers across the top of the keyboard) and release ALT. As soon as you lift your finger off the ALT key the Em dash will appear. Tap the NumLk key again to return to alpha characters. Of course if you have a keypad, you don't need to press the NumLk key. (On the Mac I understand it's shift, option, hyphen - but haven't verified)

The En dash would be ALT and 0 1 5 0 (generally used to separate two numbers, such as in a date (2011–12) or score (5–0).

In Microsoft Word, Excel, etc., it's easier:

First try typing two dashes one after the other—this works sometimes.

Otherwise, for the Em dash, you still need to press the NumLk key, then CTRL+ALT+Dash (the one that's available because you pressed the NumLk key—mine is on the same key as my colon/simi-colon).

For En dash, press the NumLk key, then CTRL+Dash

If you can't be bothered, simply cut/paste:
- (hyphen)
– (en-dash)
— (em-dash)

...there you go.

Let Grammer Girl tell you when and how to use them!
